* And So They Say: Gib Suhr: “I’m like the Hillbillies— I put on my shoes when it gets cold outside.” Fern McDonald: “I think we should all be mighty proud of the way our Main Street looks.” Joanna Stewart: “When I was a kid I couldn’t figure out why all the grown people were in such a turmoil before Christmas. I know now.” Butch Ostmeyer: “If our entire fair board was composed of members like Charlie Hance when he was able to serve, we’d have no troubles.” Velma Bedore: “All I had for my Thanksgiving dinner was a sandwich, but I think I felt a lot better than most folks the next day.”

* The Rooks County Commission announced the Rooks County Free Fair Directors after making C. L. Hance an honorary member in appreciation for his services. Hance had served for a great many years as the member from Rush Township, but had to retire due to illness. The members for the 1967 Board were Alfred Jackson, John Conger, Marvin Jackson, Darrel Gartrell, Melvin Griffin, Darrel Sutor, Freeman Sander, Leon McComb, Vester Maddy, Charles Reed, Ed Riffel, Alfred Baldwin, Willard Hale, Alvin Poore, D. Hinkhouse, Keith Elliott, Henry Plant, Walt O’Brien, Dean Stewart, George Thyfault, Frank Lindsey, George Ostmeyer, Gus Overley, Glen Keas and Russell Dick.

Stockton senior Greg Stice was named as one of the ends on the Topeka Capital Journal Kansas High School All-State Third Football Team. Stice was the only player from any of the Mid-Continent League teams that was recognized.

* Although Mr. and Mrs. Reid Baxter and son, Blaine, had purchased the Wright Hardware Company during the summer and had been operating it for some time under the name of Baxter Hardware and Electric, there had not been a grand opening. But that was to be taken care of on the weekend with special bargains being offered and registration for some very nice prizes. Coffee and doughnuts were to be served.

* Sixteen boys had reported for wrestling at Stockton High School with Kenneth Ellegood as coach. The returning lettermen were Roger Winters, Tom Carmicheal, Brad Bats and Everett Lowry. The others making up the rest of the team were Bobby Van Eaton, Curtis McCall, Quentin Van Eaton, David Baughman, David Couch, Steve Veverka, Mike Morrissey, Leslie Conn, Mike Saunders, David Kennedy, Pat Nichols and Roger Roy.

* The Webster Reservoir was one of the recreation areas in Kansas that received grants from the Land and Water Conservation Fund for roadwork in their areas. The grant to Webster was for $40,000.00 with work to start in the summer.

* Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Colburn had received word to vacate the property on which their meat processing plant was locatedtomakewayforthe new highway by January 1st. This was one month sooner than expected, so the Colburns planned to close their business on December 28th with the last slaughter date set for December 13th.

* The Western States Rodeo Association had awarded Leon McComb & Sons (Gail and Keith) the trophy for outstanding Saddle Bronc Horse in the association circuit. This was the third year the award had been given to saddle bronc, Tom Dooley, which many people of the area had seen in action at the Plainville Rodeo.

* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: Christmas isn’t what it used to be when you gave every man on your list a necktie; every woman a handkerchief; and every kid a pair of mittens.

* Looking Back Fourteen Years Ago: The blizzard, which had brought seven inches of snow to the area, had tied up traffic and caused hardship to the livestock and turkeys due to the 8 below temperatures. The Senior class had presented their postponed play—“Drums of Death.” The cast included Dean Bigge, Charlene Proctor, Stanley Walter, Shirley Brown, Shirlee Hazen, Elaine Dryden, Earlene Buss, Gary Pauley, Joe Denison and Carol Holsman. Ted Sammons had received the Bronze Star for action in Korea.

* On sale at Glenn’s Mr. AG were ten pounds of Colorado red potatoes for 39¢, a package of 75 Phillips Milk of Magnesia tablets for 49¢, Swiss steak for 79¢ a pound, and a dozen eggs for 31¢.

* Showing at the Nova Theatre was the movie “Cast A Giant Shadow” starring Kirk Douglas and Senta Berger.
