* And So They Say: City manager C. N. Harper: “In spite of this summer being a little cooler than last summer, a little more electricity was used up to the first of August, and the swimming pool revenue was also more than last year.” Francis Cadoret: “A person has to be a millionaire these days in order to buy all the things his kids need to start back to school.” Erma Jean Price: “Someone told me that our first frost will be September 15th. I certainly hope they don’t know what they are talking about.” Kenneth Medley: “I like the harness races better than the motorcycle races at the Fair because everyone doesn’t stand up in front of you if a horse goes flying off the track.”

* Gayle Miller had been released from the Plainville hospital after being taken there for treatment for injuries received when his 1953 Dodge plunged off a railroad trestle about eight miles east of Stockton. He was accompanied by two other youths, Brock Krysl and Eugene Mason, both of who received lesser injuries. The car was completely demolished, but the passengers were able to crawl out and walk back to town. It seemed that the favorite summer sport of the younger set was to drive down the railroad track, and as far as it is known, this was the first accident. It was apparently caused when the rail pinched the tire and caused a blowout.

* Mr. and Mrs. Leo Bird, Andrea and Eric had returned home from a ten day trip to Hawaii. They made the trip with five airlines being used. They spent seven days in Honolulu and three days on the Island of Maui. They stated it was much more beautiful than the Honolulu area, which they thought was pretty commercialized. While on Maui, they visited Mr. and Mrs. Merle Swank, and in Honolulu, they had a nice visit with Mary Alice Southard. They spent a lot of time on the beaches and enjoyed visiting the International Market Place, the Sea Life Park, Pearl Harbor, the Dole Pineapple Factory, and an old whaling port.

* Rev. and Mrs. Don Rock and family moved to Stockton from Rapid City, S. D. and he assumed his duties as the pastor of the Main Street Christian Church. The family consisted of Don and Garnett, and their three children Larry, Kathy and Steve. A potluck dinner was held at the Church to welcome the Rocks into the community.

* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: It is good to count your blessings once in a while, but if you want to keep them you sometimes have to do something about it yourself.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: Darlene Maddy had been crowned Rooks County 4-H Queen by Senator Frank Carlson on the last night of the Fair. The Baptist Church was starting a series of revival meetings.

* Mr. and Mrs. Kent L. Chesney of Woodston were getting ready to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary with an open house at the Woodston Methodist Church.

* On sale at Slansky’s IGA were two pounds of seedless grapes for 33¢, frying chickens for 33¢ a pound, ten cans of frozen TV lemonade for $1.00, and pork chops for 59¢ a pound.

* The marriage of Patricia Jean Berkley and Rodger Dee Taylor was solemnized August 19th at the Congregational Church.

* Showing at the Park Drive-In were the movies, “Waco” starring Howard Keel and Jane Russell, and “Easy Come, Easy Go” starring Elvis.

* Martha Jane Conn and Kinney Ray Baxter exchanged double ring marriage vows on August 11th at the Stockton Methodist Church with Rev. Sanders B. Clayton officiating the ceremony.
