* Jerlyn Kay was born at 1:26 a.m. on Thursday, January 2nd to Ronna and Stanley Hockett of Codell. By virtue of that early arrival Jerlyn was named the 1964 Rooks County New Year’s Baby. She tipped the scales at seven pounds and five ounces, and had big sister Belinda Sue, aged 17 months, to welcome her home.

* Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Buss had received a letter from their daughter, Mrs. Max Fiskin of Baltimore, MD, telling of her visit to Washington D. C. the Sunday on which President John F. Kennedy’s body lay in state in the Rotunda of the Capitol. Joyce had been one of the thousands who passed by the casket, having stood in line for over four hours walking by at 10:30 at night.

* Don Yoxall was somewhat incapacitated owing to the fact that he had caught his right hand while using a grease gun. It took eighteen stitches to close the wound.

* A vacant house on the Raymond Casey land three miles northwest of Zurich had been broken into with a quantity of tools taken. The loot included three welders and an assortment of other tools with the total valuation being estimated at around $700.00. The tools belonged to Mr. Casey and Ted Beckley.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: An explosion had occurred at the county house that damaged the building and equipment to the amount of $7,000.00. The weather had warmed up to above zero. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hrabe had celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary.

* Mr. and Mrs. Roger Walker had announced the engagement of their daughter, Thelma Jane, to Ronald Dean Novotny, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Novotny.

* Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Waller had entertained a few of their daughter Becky’s girl friends at a dinner in honor of her tenth birth anniversary. The guests were Donna and Elizabeth Zoller, Pam Miller and Patty Knight.

* Showing at the Nova Theatre were the movies, “Bye Bye Birdie” starring Janet Leigh, Dick Van Dyke, Ann Margret and Bobby Rydell, and “The Three Stooges Go Around the World in a Daze.”

* Richard Eggers had purchased a senior yearling heifer from Virgil Wegener of Norton. The new animal was a registered Milking Shorthorn. The record of the transfer of ownership had been made by the American Shorthorn Society at Springfield, Missouri.

* On sale at Oyer Food Market were ten apples for 50¢, two pounds of thick sliced bacon for 98¢, a four-pound canned ham for $3.29 and two pounds of sweet potatoes for 25¢.
