Suspect found dead following standoff near Glen Elder MITCHELL COUNTY — On Saturday, Oct. 23, the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from a 78-year-old male who reported that he was forcibly taken at gunpoint and held for around 26 hours by his 59-year-old acquaintance, John Roudybush, of Glen Elder.

Weather service confirms tornadoes in western Kansas

SHARON SPRINGS — The National Weather Service says an EF-0 tornado touched down in northwest Kansas as severe storms swept through the state last Tuesday evening and early Wednesday. The weather service in Goodland said a twister near Sharon Springs traveled about 3.3 miles, with a peak gust of 85 mph. No injuries were reported. A cart and maintenance shed at the Sharon Springs Golf Course was destroyed.

Guardsmen sent to help Louisiana in hurricane recovery

TOPEKA — Governor Laura Kelly announced Wednesday, Sept. 1st, that soldiers and airmen from the Kansas National Guard were being deployed to Louisiana to provide support in and around areas affected by Hurricane Ida, according to a media release from her office. The Guardsmen are being deployed as part of an Emergency Management Assistance Compact, a multistate agreement that allows states to send government aid to other states in emergency situations.

FHSU dedicates Schmidt Foundation Center for Art and Design HAYS — On Friday, August 20, the Tiger community came together to celebrate Fort Hays State University’s new, stunning Schmidt Foundation Center for Art and Design and to commemorate its namesakes, Bob and Pat Schmidt. The Schmidts enjoyed nearly 69 years of married life together before Pat passed away in 2015 and Bob in 2017.
