Man killed when riding mower overturned WICHITA — Wichita police say a man died last Wednesday afternoon after becoming pinned under water by an overturned riding lawn mower. Juan Salazar, 42, who was employed by a lawn service, was mowing grass along the banks of a neighborhood pond when the lawnmower slipped off the embankment and rolled, trapping Salazar under the water.

Wilson man sentenced for rape convictions

ELLSWORTH — A Wilson man has been sentenced to more than 29 years in prison for his conviction on three counts of rape, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt. Dalton Eberhart, 20, of Wilson, was sentenced last week in Ellsworth County District Court to serve 350 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections. Eberhart had pleaded guilty to the charges in February. In addition, Johnson sentenced Eberhart to lifetime post-release supervision and registration as a sex-offender.

Fire destroys rural Rooks County home PLAINVILLE — The Plainville Fire Department was dispatched around 4:30 p.m., April 22, to a residence fire in the 700 block of Highway K-18, according to Fire Chief Craig Wise. He stated the home was a single-family dwelling, and the fire was caused by an electrical issue.

Dog found in trash can recovering

SALINA — A group of disc golfers at Thomas Park in Salina on Saturday, March 27, made a sad and strange discovery when they heard sounds coming from a trash can. The group thought it might be an opossum or raccoon, but they discovered a dog wrapped in a plastic shopping sack. One of the disc-golfers called the Salina Police who dispatched the Salina Animal Services to assist in the animal rescue.

Explosive device found in Norton County

NORTON — Law enforcement authorities are investigating what they believe to be an explosive device found last Wednesday in Norton County, according to a media release from the sheriff’s department. The device was found at the Norton County impound lot. The sheriff’s office asked the Fort Riley Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team to respond and they were able to neutralize the device. Authorities are working to determine where it came from and who built the device. (HaysPost.com)
