MORE PRECIOUS. $31,500. That's the approximate current price for a pound of gold. No wonder some people spend time panning for it. But have you ever heard of rhodium? It's the most expensive metal in the world, with an approximate current price of about $83,200 per pound. Back in January, the price was about $224,000 per pound. At that price, a person could retire well with just 5 pounds. Rhodium is used in catalytic converters along with platinum, another expensive metal. However, there's something far more valuable than either rhodium, gold, or platinum. The thing that's 'much more precious than gold,' according to the Apostle Peter, is genuine faith (1 Pet. 1:7). Can you imagine someone on their deathbed desiring to be comforted, and so they ask a loved one to read through a report of their net worth? What amount of net worth would bring comfort to a soul if that soul is facing eternity separated from their Creator in the lake of fire? While I doubt that anyone has ever taken solace in their net worth moments before entering eternity, I can imagine a person asking for someone to read them God's Word. King David wrote of the preciousness of God's Word in Psalm 19. How precious was God's Word to David? He said it's precious or valuable because it converts the soul (v. 7). He's implying that it brings conviction of sin and causes a person to trust in God's Promised Seed for eternal life spiritually. David also knew that God's Word makes a person wise (v. 7), that it causes believers to rejoice in their hearts (v. 8), that it gives knowledge (v. 8), and that it endures forever because it's absolute truth (v. 9). But then David says that God's Word is 'More to be desired than gold, Yea, than much fine (pure) gold' (v. 10). The question, though, is just how valuable is God's Word to us seeing it's the only book that teaches us of Jesus' precious blood that was shed for our sin?
