There have been several candidates who have filed and whose names will appear on the ballot for the General School Election to be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. For the Board of Education of Unified School District #271 (Stockton) for the four at-large positions, five have filed.

At the Rooks County Commission meeting held on Tuesday, May 23rd, the commissioners had a speaker phone meeting with David Harper, the Kansas Director for Divisions of Property Values and Vehicles, regarding the County’s high tax appraisals this year. Harper recommended the commissioners keep updated on property sales, check to see how accurate the 2023 property values are, and meet with the appraiser so she can explain the appeals process to them.

The Stockton USD No. 271 Board of Education held two special meetings on Tuesday, May 23rd, and Friday, May 26th.

Palco has been chosen as one of ten communities receiving almost $3.2 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding. Grant awards were made in three categories: Water and Sewer, Commercial Rehabilitation, and Housing.

Stockton’s Kenneth Miller, thought to be the oldest living World War II veteran in Rooks County, was honored by his peers, family, friends, and public officials at the Rooks County Historical Museum on Tuesday, May 23rd, with a flag presentation from United States Senator Jerry Moran.

In his annual address during the Memorial Day services at the Stockton Cemetery on Monday, May 29th, veteran and VFW Post 8873 Quartermaster John Berkley spoke as follows: “Thank you for coming out to our Memorial Day Ceremonies. This is the day we recognize those who served to defend our country, and especially those who lost their lives doing so or were wounded in battle. While you are contemplating these sacrifices, give some thought about exactly what these men and women were serving to accomplish.

During her City Manager’s Report at the Stockton City Commission meeting on Tuesday, May 16th, Courtney Flower stated that the highway project on Main Street from Elm Street going east was reviewed by the State. The Department of Transportation also asked the City to discuss and gather suggestions for the bricked area of Main Street.

During the May 16th meeting of the Rooks County Commission, Tawnya Rohr, director of the Foster Grandparents/ Senior Companion Program, and several of Rooks County’s grandparents and companions met with the commissioners.

The peak of summer travel across our nation’s highways is about to begin. The Kansas Highway Patrol and law enforcement partners across the state will have additional enforcement May 22nd through June 4th for the annual Click It or Ticket Campaign, which encourages seatbelt and child safety seat use for occupants of all ages.
