Former Stockton man loses life in one-vehicle accident

A Kansas man, who spent most of his teen years growing up in and around Stockton, died on Tuesday, June 13, following a one-vehicle accident in Cowley County. Charles Raymond Velz of Winfield, 50, was eastbound on U160 at milepost 316, at 9:25 a.m., when the 2023 Western Star Cement Mixer truck he was driving left the roadway, struck a culvert, and partially overturned in the south ditch.

Flag presentation held at SVM

It was more than fitting that four Stockton VFW Post 8873 veterans held a United States Flag presentation for the residents at Solomon Valley Manor on Flag Day, Wednesday, June 14th. Army veterans John Berkley, Scott Baker, Ed Thayer, and Navy veteran Tim Johnston were on hand during the evening presentation with Baker starting the program by reading about the history and meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance before they led the residents in the reciting of the Pledge.

Matt Whitney meets with county commissioners

Matt Whitney met with the Rooks County Commission on Tuesday, June 13th, to talk about concerns and ask questions of the commissioners. Whitney asked about the mil levy, and if the County would be going revenue neutral to which commissioner John Ruder replied that the Commission is waiting on the county valuations, and then they will meet with the accountant in July to look at the numbers for the upcoming 2024 budget.

It’s the Millers!

While most of the area has been enjoying cool evenings and some late-night thunderstorms, this is also why we have seen an abundance of Miller moths this May and June. The flight of the moths on their annual migration to the mountains originates in fields across eastern Colorado and adjacent areas of western Kansas and Nebraska.

Letters containing suspicious white powder being investigated across Kansas

TOPEKA The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), and several local police departments and fire departments have responded today after mail was received by legislators and other public officials containing a suspicious white powder.

Rooks County Commissioners meet with Rooks County EMS Director

At the June 6th Rooks County Commission meeting, the commissioners met with EMS Director Megan Niblock about replacing the water heater in the Plainville ambulance building. Niblock has received one bid and asked if the commissioners would cover the remainder of the cost for a new heater above $500.00. The commissioners will cover the rest of the cost. Niblock also talked about the land purchase for Plainville’s building expansion. After a short discussion, the commissioners directed Niblock to speak with the county and city attorneys about the options for the purchase.
