Sports betting to launch in Kansas on September 1, 2022

Governor Laura Kelly announced Thursday, August 18, that sportsbooks at Kansas’ four state-owned casinos can begin accepting wagers in person and on mobile platforms starting September 1, 2022, and will officially open September 8. Sports wagering, like all gaming in Kansas, is owned by the state and operated by the Kansas Lottery. Under temporary rules and regulations, the state’s four casino gaming partners can begin launching sports betting just in time for the first professional football game on September 8.

Youth and Disability Deer Season open

Youth 17 and younger, who possess a valid deer permit, may hunt during this special deer season (September 3rd through September 11th) only while under the immediate supervision of an adult 18 or older. Any person who possesses a valid deer permit and has a permit to hunt from a vehicle pursuant to KAR 115-18-4 or a disability assistance permit issued pursuant to KAR 115-18-15 may also hunt during this season. All resident and nonresident permits are valid, and equipment restrictions designated on permits apply. Hunger orange is required.

2022 Rooks County valuations up over $11 million

Information taken from the Rooks County valuation chart printed elsewhere in this issue shows that the 2022 Rooks County valuations increased $11,296,109.00 from 2021, with oil coming in with the biggest increase of $732,445.00 in Stockton, $1,099,950.00 in Plain ville, $114,698.00 in Palco, and $63,464.00 in Damar. Woodston and Zurich showed a decrease in total valuations of $14,845.00 and $28,648.00, respectively. Township 1, Township 3 and Township 7 also showed a total valuation decrease of $47,017.00, $5,659.00 and $83,628.00.

He forwarded the information that it was dry and powdery to road and bridge supervisor Rich Bouchey.

Dove hunting begins next Thursday, September 1st

The annual dove-hunting season in Kansas begins next Thursday, September 1st and runs until November 29th.The daily bag limit of 15 applies to mourning and whitewinged doves, single species or in combination. There is no limit on Eurasian collared or ringed turtle doves, but any taken in addition to the mourning and whitewinged dove daily bag must have a fully-feathered wing attached while being transported. The possession limit is 45 (mourning and whitewinged doves.)

Former Stockton resident Larry Baxter returns from recent Honor Flight trip

The following excerpt was taken from a June 29, 2002 article in The Holton Recorder, written by Jennifer McDaniel. One of the veterans featured in the article, which was entitled “Honor Flight offers veterans a once in a lifetime experience,” was Larry Baxter, a U.S. Army and Vietnam veteran. Baxter, who resides in Holton, is a former Stockton resident, and is the son of the late Jack and Ileta Baxter. The trip was taken on June 5-6. Baxter’s part in the article is as follows: Vietnam veteran Larry Baxter of Holton was recently a part of an Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C. The trip (June 5th and June 6th), honored veterans from Holton, Lyndon and Franklin County who toured Arlington Cemetery and watched the changing of the guards before visiting the World War II, Korean, Vietnam, Lincoln and Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorials during the afternoon.
